Today we are going to be looking into Green Tripe! What is it? Why would you feed it? How do you feed it? How can eat it? Plus, some fun recipes! So, let’s dig in!

What is Tripe?

Tripe is the stomach lining of (typically) ruminant animals. Though pork tripe is a favorite food in some human cuisines. Most tripe available for pets is from Beef, though you can also find Lamb, Goat, Bison & Elk Tripe.
Ruminant animals have 4 compartments in their stomach. The first two compartments are called the reticulum & the rumen. When humans eat tripe they only eat tripe from these first 2 compartments. When tripe is for human consumption it is bleached and may be called blanket tripe or honeycomb tripe. You can sometimes find tripe at the grocery store but it is meant for human consumption so it is always bleached! Grocery store tripe is not the tripe you want to feed to your carnivore!
Green Tripe is what you will find for pet consumption. Instead of being bleached, green tripe is lightly rinsed. Rinsing removed some of the excess grass & forage that the animal consumed, while still retaining the beneficial bacteria & enzymes. However, these bacteria & enzymes are destroyed when cooked or canned. In addition to rinsing the tripe, the Schoenborns who make our products, also run magnets through all of the tripe we sell. This helps to ensure that anything weird that the animal might have consumed is removed. Many ruminates will eat just about anything, so those magnets catch a lot of inappropriate items!
For pet tripe, it is common for all 4 of the stomach compartments to be used. However, at My Pet Carnivore, we use only the first 2 compartments. We believe this makes our tripe superior to what is found elsewhere!

What are the Benefits of Tripe?

Raw green tripe offers the most benefits of any tripe. Here are a few of the advantages that raw green tripe has to offer:

  • Green tripe is great for enticing picky eaters to eat & stimulating appetite.
  • Green tripe works wonders for digestion due to its ample amount of probiotics & digestive enzymes.
  • Tripe can help relieve constipation.
  • The digestive enzymes help to purify & cleanse the blood & help remove toxins, parasites & fungi.
  • Raw green tripe may also help with pets that consume poop – coprophagia. If the disorder is caused by nutrient deficiency or the need for microbiome support.
  • Raw Green Tripe fed in chunks is particularly good for your pet’s dental health! Basically, a delicious carnivore toothbrush!
  • Tripe can be helpful for pets with kidney issues as it has a 1:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.
  • Even if your pet has a red meat allergy they can typically handle raw green tripe without issue.
  • Raw Tripe can also help boost the immune system & fight allergies due to its positive effect on your pet’s digestive tract.

The only downside of tripe is that it is stinky! You won’t mind the smell as much once you see the wonderful health benefits that your pet experiences though!

Who Can Eat Tripe?

Tripe is a natural part of whole prey ruminant animals. This makes it a suitable food for dogs, cats & ferrets! Though cats & ferrets tend to be a bit picky. You will find that some ferrets & cats love tripe while others are not interested. Tripe is loved by almost all dogs!

How Do You Feed Tripe?

For raw feeding purposes, green tripe is considered meat. So, it is not meant to be the only thing you feed. To balance the diet you will need to add bones & organs.

It is a good idea to start with a small amount of tripe and work your way up. Depending on the size of your pet you might want to start with 1/4 teaspoon to a tablespoon. Too much tripe, too fast can cause digestive upset. So, start slow.

Tripe is a wonderful thing to add to your pet’s diet whether you add it monthly, weekly, or daily! Your pet & their health will thank you for adding raw green tripe to their diet! Remember, you can thaw, portion, & refreeze all My Pet Carnivore products!

If you are considering adding raw to your pets kibble tripe is a great option! Even adding as little as 10% tripe to your pet’s normal food can make a huge difference healthwise.

What Tripe Options Does My Pet Carnivore Have?

The majority of the tripe varieties that we have for sale are from Beef. We have plain Green Beef Tripe ground in 2 LB & 5 LB containers. We also have Green Beef Tripe Strips in 5 LB bags. These Strips are fantastic for your pet’s chewing pleasure & really help with dental health! If you need the Strips a bit smaller you can easily cut them with a sharp knife (having the tripe slightly frozen works best for cutting purposes).

We also have Goat & Lamb Tripe available ground in 2 LB containers. These are just as delicious as the Beef Tripe but offer a bit more variety. Remember variety is an essential part of any fresh food diet! Be warned, some people think that the Goat & Lamb Tripe smells worse than the Beef Tripe. Which means your pet will love it even more!

We also offer Dehydrated Beef Tripe Strips that are handmade here at our HQ in Indianapolis in small batches. Yes, dehydrating the tripe does smell awful, but it is worth it to know just how much our customers will enjoy it! We also have Freeze-Dried Bison Tripe. This is a great training treat option!

In addition, we have things mixed with tripe including our Beef Tripe Supermix & Tripe with Trachea & Gullet. Both of these options combine the health benefits of tripe with the joint benefits of trachea & gullet. The Supermix also contains some of our Whole Ground Beef. However, the Supermix does not contain enough bones or organs to be the only thing you feed. It will still need to be balanced with additional organs and bones. As will all fresh food diet, variety is essential!

Tripe Recipes:

There are lots of fun things that you can do with Green Tripe… once you get over the smell a little bit. The easiest & least stinky is to stuff a Raw Trachea with Ground Tripe! You can also hide other goodies in the trachea as well like Whole Ground Products, Heart Chunks, Organs & more! Stuffed Trachea can be fed frozen or thawed. It is best served outside or in an easy-to-clean area.

You’ve heard of bone broth, but what about Tripe Broth? Yes, this actually is a thing! Tripe Broth has many benefits including appetite stimulation, easy-to-digest nutrients, great for adding moisture content to a meal & it tastes amazing (if you’re a carnivore!). You can make this in an electronic pressure cooker, on the stove, or in a crock pot. Put your Tripe Strips in the pot, cover with water & add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Cover your container and cook. For stove & crockpot, cook on low overnight. For the pressure cooker, cook at high pressure for an hour and a half. Then remove the Tripe Strips & pour the resulting broth into jars. You can freeze the broth for later use. As you might imagine, making this broth is extremely stinky! So, if possible make it outside. You can clean your pressure cooker after by washing the washable parts thoroughly then putting 1 cup of white vinegar in the pot & pressure cooking on high for about 5 minutes. It takes care of the smell super well!

You can also have lots of fun dehydrating Green Tripe into different shapes & combining them with different proteins to make oh-so-delicious cookies for your beloved carnivore! Dehydrated Tripe on its own is a great treat. Both ground & chunked tripe can be dehydrated! If you want to get more creative with Tripe Strips you can shape them into pretzels, twists, braids & more! You can also cut it thinly (you’ll need a sharp knife!) & twist the tripe around other things like Pork Tongue or strips of Beaver Tail. You can thinly slice the Pork Tongue & make a Tripe & Tounge braid! You can cut the Tripe Strips into rectangles & then spread them with spleen & twist it up! This makes it look like a jelly-filled bakery delight!

The Ground Tripe can be used to make a variety of shapes & sizes. It’s fun to shape the Ground Tripe into a mound, then make a dent in it with your thumb. Then fill the dent with spleen. It looks just like a traditional thumbprint cookie! You can also mix the Ground Tripe with other things like Trachea & Gullet, Beef Organ Mix, & other goodies for unique treats sure to inspire the best behavior in your pet!

Treats can be dehydrated in the oven or a dehydrator. Place the treats on the rack of your dehydrator or on a parchment paper lined pan in the oven (set oven temp to between 120-160). Then dehydrate until your desired dryness is reached. This can vary greatly depending on how thick your treats are. The thicker they are the longer they will take to dehydrate. To get a good dry treat you will want to let the treats dehydrate at least overnight but longer is required sometimes. Having a dehydrator is ideal because then you can set it up outside or in your garage where the smell shouldn’t bother you as much.

Conclusion:

Well, there you have it! There are lots of wonderful reasons to feed Raw Green Tripe including gut health, dental health & so much more! Additionally, there are lots of ways to feed tripe raw or made it into treats or broth! You really cannot go wrong with the wonderful quality of My Pet Carnivore Green Tripe!
